Assert messages are used in multicast multiaccess network to stop the duplicate streams. When the same stream is being received by two interfaces from the same source they share the assert messages and on the basics of metric value one can be forwarder and another will be pruned. But if the both links are having equal metric value then on the basics of higher loopback address election takes places and will become the forwarder and DR.
