Cisco Acquisition Summary

Cisco's growth strategy is based on identifying and driving market transitions. Corporate Development focuses on acquisitions that help Cisco capture these market transitions.

Cisco segments acquisitions into three categories: market acceleration, market expansion, and new market entry. The target companies might bring different types of assets to Cisco, including great talent and technology, mature products and solutions, or new go-to-market and business models. Cisco particularly seeks acquisitions with the potential to reach billion dollar markets.

Integration is essential to successful acquisitions. Our overall business development effort includes engaging from the early diligence phase through to mainstream business, by investing in dedicated integration resources across the company at the corporate and functional levels. We have a long history of integration, achieving best practices through continuous learning and deep experience with a process that challenges all companies who repeatedly make acquisitions.

Leaders in IT and other markets frequently seek Cisco's advice on acquisition integration. Our integration process starts with the entire acquisition strategy. Cisco seeks acquisitions where there is not only a strong business case but also a shared business and technological vision, and where compatibility of core values and culture foster an environment for success.

Internet blackout to protest SOPA

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), also known as House Bill 3261 or H.R. 3261, is a bill that was introduced in the United States House of Representatives on October 26, 2011. The bill, if made law, would expand the ability of U.S. law enforcement and copyright holders to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods.

The originally proposed bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as copyright holders, to seek court orders against websites accused of enabling or facilitating copyright infringement. Depending on who makes the request, the court order could include barring online advertising networks and payment facilitators from doing business with the allegedly infringing website, barring search engines from linking to such sites, and requiring Internet service providers to block access to such sites. The bill would make unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content a crime, with a maximum penalty of five years in prison for ten such infringements within six months. The bill also gives immunity to Internet services that voluntarily take action against websites dedicated to infringement, while making liable for damages any copyright holder who knowingly misrepresents that a website is dedicated to infringement.

A development such as this is extremely harmful to the Internet and would significantly alter the way Internet works. This could not possibly be construed as a US National issue. The implications of US decisions on Internet Policy stretches beyond its borders, worldwide. SOPA / PIPA seek intervention on sites that are non-US sites as well, and naturally US would do extended work on the basis of an ACT like this to cover the rest of the world with the 'wisdom' enshrined in the Act.

Juniper Over Promises Under Delivers

No one has ever thought that competition will smash Juniper openly in market because of its false commitments. This has been seen first time in Internet history. Finally a website has been launched by CISCO which explicitly says that how CISCO(Customer Trusted Partner) is Better than Juniper not only in Data Center Networking but in each and every aspect. Below are the few facts which Juniper committed long time back to customers but still not able to deliver them:-

1. Juniper promised 100 Gigabit Ethernet on MX-series edge routing products two-and-a-half years ago. It’s still not available.
2. Juniper announced the T4000 core router in 2nd half CY2010. It’s been over a year now, where is it?
3. Juniper’s Project Falcon mobile platform: After three launches in 2009, 2010 and – again — in 2011, Juniper still has not publicly debuted the product or announced any customers of it.
4. Juniper’s Project Stratus/QFabric for the data center: Despite four announcements since February 2009, the QFabric system is still unavailable. If QFabric is finally delivered later this year, it will have taken more than two-and-a-half years to deliver. What is available does not deliver on Juniper’s “3-2-1” vision.

Lokpal Bill can curb the politicians

See how Lokpal Bill can curb the politicians,

Existing System
System Proposed by civil society
No politician or senior officer ever goes to jail despite huge evidence because Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) and CBI directly come under the government. Before starting investigation or initiating prosecution in any case, they have to take permission from the same bosses, against whom the case has to be investigated.
Lokpal at centre and Lokayukta at state level will be independent bodies. ACB and CBI will be merged into these bodies. They will have power to initiate investigations and prosecution against any officer or politician without needing anyoneâ³ permission. Investigation should be completed within 1 year and trial to get over in next 1 year. Within two years, the corrupt should go to jail.
No corrupt officer is dismissed from the job because Central Vigilance Commission, which is supposed to dismiss corrupt officers, is only an advisory body. Whenever it advises government to dismiss any senior corrupt officer, its advice is never implemented.
Lokpal and Lokayukta will have complete powers to order dismissal of a corrupt officer. CVC and all departmental vigilance will be merged into Lokpal and state vigilance will be merged into Lokayukta.
No action is taken against corrupt judges because permission is required from the Chief Justice of India to even register an FIR against corrupt judges.
Lokpal & Lokayukta shall have powers to investigate and prosecute any judge without needing anyoneâ³ permission.
Nowhere to go - People expose corruption but no action is taken on their complaints.
Lokpal & Lokayukta will have to enquire into and hear every complaint.
There is so much corruption within CBI and vigilance departments. Their functioning is so secret that it encourages corruption within these agencies.
All investigations in Lokpal & Lokayukta shall be transparent. After completion of investigation, all case records shall be open to public. Complaint against any staff of Lokpal & Lokayukta shall be enquired and punishment announced within two months.
Weak and corrupt people are appointed as heads of anti-corruption agencies.
Politicians will have absolutely no say in selections of Chairperson and members of Lokpal & Lokayukta. Selections will take place through a transparent and public participatory process.
Citizens face harassment in government offices. Sometimes they are forced to pay bribes. One can only complaint to senior officers. No action is taken on complaints because senior officers also get their cut.
Lokpal & Lokayukta will get public grievances resolved in time bound manner, impose a penalty of Rs 250 per day of delay to be deducted from the salary of guilty officer and award that amount as compensation to the aggrieved citizen.
Nothing in law to recover ill gotten wealth. A corrupt person can come out of jail and enjoy that money.
Loss caused to the government due to corruption will be recovered from all accused.
Small punishment for corruption- Punishment for corruption is minimum 6 months and maximum 7 years.
Enhanced punishment - The punishment would be minimum 5 years and maximum of life imprisonment.

3G Services Licence Issued

The Government on Wednesday allocated spectrum for third generation (3G) mobile services to operators including Vodafone Essar, Reliance Communication and Tata Teleservices.
Mr Syed Safawi, CEO - Wireless Business, RCom “By releasing the 3G spectrum as promised, the Government has paved the way for the next revolution in mobile telecommunications. Reliance Communication is fully geared to bring alive this superior 3G experience to all its consumers.”
Tata Teleservices Ltd spokesperson said “We are delighted to have received 3G spectrum for commercial use in nine telecom crcles after the amendment in the UAS Licence. As announced earlier, we have already placed orders for 3G network equipment. We will now closely work with our partners NTT DoCoMo, acknowledged as the world leaderin telecom technology development, to put our network and content in place. We look forward to speedy rollout of world-class 3G services which will redefine the telecom experience in India.”
Licence disputes
“We are pleased to receive the spectrum today. Our implementation is on schedule and we will launch 3G services for our customers in a few months, “said Mr Samaresh Parida, Director Strategy, Vodafone Essar.
However, Aircel and Idea Cellular's plans to roll out third generation (3G) mobile services in Chennai and Punjab respectively could get delayed with the Department of Telecom caught in a technical issue with respect to licensing. While in the case of Aircel having two separate cellular licences for Tamil Nadu and Chennai is coming in the way, for Idea Cellular having overlapping licences in Punjab is the problem spot.
Under the old cellular services regime, Chennai and Tamil Nadu were divided into the two separate circles. As a result, Aircel had got two separate mobile licences. However, when it came to 3G auction, the DoT considered Tamil Nadu and Chennai as a single unit. Post-the auction, the DoT is issuing amendment to those bidders who already have a licence incorporating the new 3G guidelines.
In Aircel's case, the Tamil Nadu cellular licence does not include Chennai; therefore, the DoT cannot amend service conditions for Chennai to include 3G services.
Idea Cellular may have to surrender one of their licences in Punjab. Idea had got its own licence for Punjab, but also acquired Spice Cellular which had operations in the same circle. The company has been seeking a refund for surrendering the licence.

BGP Vulnerability Found In IOS-XR

Cisco IOS XR Software contains a vulnerability in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) feature. The vulnerability manifests itself when a BGP peer announces a prefix with a specific, valid but unrecognized transitive attribute. On receipt of this prefix, the Cisco IOS XR device will corrupt the attribute before sending it to the neighboring devices. Neighboring devices that receive this corrupted update may reset the BGP peering session.

Affected devices running Cisco IOS XR Software corrupt the unrecognized attribute before sending to neighboring devices, but neighboring devices may be running operating systems other than Cisco IOS XR Software and may still reset the BGP peering session after receiving the corrupted update. This is per standards defining the operation of BGP.

Cisco developed a fix that addresses this vulnerability and will be releasing free software maintenance upgrades (SMU) progressively starting 28 August 2010. This advisory will be updated accordingly as fixes become available.

Stop 3G Services In India

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asked the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to direct service providers to stop the operation of all third generation (3G) mobile services across the country, “particularly in Jammu & Kashmir”, till the infrastructure to enable full tapping of lines is put in place.
Noting BSNL’s launch of 3G services in Jammu, the MHA said apart from problems in interception of video calls, the existing lawful tapping infrastructure is severely limited in providing usable intercepts.
“The feasibility of blocking all such services for which there is no demonstrated monitoring capability to provide lawful interception may be explored by DoT. Till a solution is arrived, all telecom service providers may be directed not to provide 3G services, particularly in Jammu & Kashmir,” the MHA said in a communication to Telecom Secretary P J Thomas.

This issue had come up last year, too, when DoT had asked BSNL and MTNL to have call monitoring facilities to enable security agencies to intercept the calls in 3G mobile services.

Highlights:-
# Only BSNL and MTNL offer 3G services currently

# BSNL has a 3G subscriber base of 1.5 million, MTNL has 400,000 subscribers

# Private players to launch 3G by end of 2010 or early 2011

# Government earned over Rs 1 lakh crore from 3G and BWA auctions recently
